Introduction
Mark D'Cruz founded Ma-Ke Bonsai Academy to give bonsai learners a disciplined path from curiosity to confident practice. His work brings together more than two decades of teaching bonsai with a deep respect for traditional Japanese practice.
The Academy combines that tradition with modern horticulture, structured education and a commitment to lifelong learning. Students are encouraged to understand why a tree responds before deciding how it should be styled.
A Life Between Disciplines
Mark's work sits between several disciplines, each shaping the way the Academy teaches, evaluates and supports bonsai practitioners.
Systems thinking, operational clarity and practical architecture.
Breaking complex practice into steps that students can repeat and review.
Patience, proportion, restraint and respect for living material.
A wider ecological lens rooted in soil, water, climate and resilience.
The Mă-Kè Bonsai Way
The Mă-Kè Bonsai Way places tree health first. Structured learning, practical experience and careful observation come before styling decisions, so each creative act is supported by horticultural understanding.
The certification pathway reflects that philosophy: students build competence through evidence, seasonal work, sustainable practice and steady progression rather than isolated demonstrations.

Educator and Mentor
Through the Certification Ladder, online Academy, residential retreats, Journal system and community, Mark mentors students across countries and stages of practice. The aim is not merely to transmit techniques, but to help each practitioner think clearly, care responsibly and develop trees over time.
